Join seasoned travel photographer and photojournalist Joel Preston Smith for a class on creating unique, eye-catching travel photos. Discover how to capture the true spirit of a place by using an intimate approach to your travel photography, whether you are touring East Timor or north Portland.

You'll learn to approach subjects, find aesthetic backgrounds, and utilize locals in the process of photographing places and events. You'll also learn travel tips for taking valuable gear on the road and will learn about opportunities available for photographers to finance travel. Joel will also cover sensitive issues related to photographing abroad, such as understanding cultural boundaries, working with authorities, and dealing with photography restrictions.

On the second session, class will take a local trip to a unique part of Portland to practice travel photography in the field. The third class will be an editing and review session of work created over the course of the class and an overview of how to submit photos for publication. Joel Preston Smith is the author of Night of a Thousand Stars and Other Portraits of Iraq.

The class will be taught by Joel Preston Smith.
