Mary Virginia Swanson on Presenting Your Work to the Fine Art Community.
Mary Virginia Swanson will provide insights into the most effective avenues for introducing your work to the gallery and museum professionals. She will discuss the value of the national and international juried exhibitions, as well as portfolio review events and other photography festivals as realistic avenues to industry professionals. Important gallery trade shows such as AIPAD and Photo LA will be discussed from the perspective of helping artists to determine which dealers will be most appropriate for their work.
Effective self-promotion materials will be shared with participants. Professional practices necessary to successfully present your work will be discussed, as well as "talking points" when given the opportunity to sign with a gallery for representation. Lastly, Swanson will discuss the value of your fine art work when granting the rights to reproduce your work.

Darius Himes on Publishing the Photographic Book.
In the first half of the afternoon session, we will cover ways to think about the overall concept and variety of design possible with a photography book. A survey of the photobook publishing field will also be presented. In the second half of the afternoon, example books, specific concerns and real costs will be discussed. Himes will present ideas for putting together a proposal, where the real costs in producing a book like, and how to think about marketing and distribution.

Both Mary Virginia Swanson and Darius Himes will be present the entire day, and contribute to each other's sessions.
MARY VIRGINIA SWANSON makes it her goal to help photographers find the strengths in their work and identify appreciative audiences for their prints, exhibitions, editorial and licensing placement. Swanson has a diverse professional background, having coordinated educational, publication and exhibitions programs for a wide range of institutions and businesses in our field, and is considered an expert in the area of marketing and licensing fine art. She works individually with photographers as a consultant and lectures widely on the subjects of marketing opportunities and awareness. Swanson contributes articles to many print and on-line publications, including PND and PDNEDU, Digital Journalist, Nueve Luz, and teachingphoto.com, among others in the US and abroad. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Center for Photography (SFCP) and the ASMP Foundation, and is the author of THE BUSINESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES.
DARIUS HIMES is Editor of the Photo-eye Booklist, a nationally recognized quarterly publication devoted to the fine-art photography book community. He speaks to students, photographers and workshop classes about the marriage of photography and books, based upon his extensive knowledge of the photography book market. He has also worked as an Adjunct Professor of Photographic Arts at the College of Santa Fe. Himes earned his BFA in photography from Arizona State University, Tempe, a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts from St. Johns College, Santa Fe campus, and actively pursues his own image-making. Darius is someone who constantly surveys the photography/publishing community and brings a wealth of information about contemporary photographic books. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Center for Photography.
