The Illustrated Life
Four Wednesdays, August 6th through 27th
6:30-9pm
$175

This class is an exploration of photography as a type of personal journaling. Through a close examination of personally significant objects, familiar places, and daily rituals, you'll learn to creatively express the tiny moments that frame your life. Class will include a look at the work of other photographers working semi-biographically, individually crafted shooting assignments, and guided reviews of work created over the course of the month.

An emphasis on shooting loosely and intuitively will get you thinking outside the box as you begin to create a body of work that illustrates your unique take on the world around you. Students should bring cameras and may shoot with film or digitally.

The class will be taught by Portland photographer Ann Ploeger.

"One could say the most appealing element in Ann Ploeger's photographs is their voyeuristic nature, the glimpse she provides of people's habits - but that's not it. One could say it's the wash of luminous color, or the careful composition that allows room for the placement of our own stories within the corners of the frame, but that's not it, either, though all those factors provide wonderful depth and elevation to her work. Sometimes, if we're lucky, we'll come across an artist intuitive enough to translate and reflect upon topics more or less universally pondered. The definition of home is one of them. And Ann Ploeger does so in a way that quietly pulls out one's own definition and places it upon that of her own, upon that of the subjects in her images." - Kirsten Rian, from the introduction to Ploeger's new book "Portraits".
