Lighting Techniques

Food Photography: Style & Light
Saturday, August 21st
10am-4pm
$115

This workshop will introduce you to the fascinating niche market of food photography and small-scale, "tabletop," studio lighting scenarios. You'll learn how to photograph food and drink for professional and commercial applications such as cookbooks and web or print ads. You'll also learn to replicate professional lighting with affordable, low-tech lighting options, perfect for aspiring food bloggers.

Longtime food photographer Ed Gowans will show you some quirky tricks of the trade and demonstrate how to shoot tethered to a live video feed for instant feedback. You'll also get hands-on experience with food styling and set design.

Required prerequisite: Lighting Basics or instructor's consent. Students should bring cameras and may shoot with film or digitally.

Edward has produced a broad range of still imagery for NW clients from his studio in the historic Oregon Cracker Building, since 1987. With a collaborative and congenial manner he creates images for advertising, catalogues, cookbooks, outdoor boards, packaging, point of sale, posters, and trade show booths. After 18 years of shooting food on film from his NW Portland location, Ed has joined STUDIO 1636 with kitchen and complete capabilities for digital capture and post production services.
