Level Two (L2): Students understand shutter speed and aperture controls and use single lens reflex (SLR) cameras in manual mode. Digital students have a basic understanding of Photoshop, Elements, and/or Lightroom. Lighting students can use strobes. Film students can use filters and burn and dodge.

Level Three (L3): Students have been photographing seriously for a few years and have taken a few photography classes or workshops. Digital students have a concrete working knowledge of Photoshop.

Level Four (L4): Professional photographers and advanced students with over five years of experience. Digital, lighting, and film students are confident using advanced techniques.
